Wiring a Shop or Detached Garage in Corvallis MT

If you're putting up a shop or detached garage, the electrical starts with one question: how much power do you actually need out there. Answer that honestly and the rest of the job, the feeder, the subpanel, the circuits, falls into place. Get it wrong and you're back in the wall a year later adding a circuit you should have run the first time.

I do this work all over the Bitterroot Valley, and Corvallis has a lot of these projects going up on bigger lots off Eastside Highway and out toward the foothills.

How do you get power to a detached building?

Power leaves your main panel at the house, runs to the new building, and lands in a subpanel out there. That feeder is the backbone of the whole job, and it's the part people underestimate.

Most of the time out here the run goes underground. That means a trench, conduit, and wire sized for both the load and the distance. Longer runs need bigger wire to make up for voltage drop, and on a lot of these Corvallis properties the shop sits a good way from the house.

Before I quote anything I walk the route. I'm looking at where your panel is, where the shop is, what's in between, driveways, a septic field, existing gas or water lines, and whether we're trenching through frozen ground or working around it.

What circuits does a shop actually need?

This is where you tell me how you use the building. A shop where you park cars and store the mower is a different job than one with a welder, an air compressor, and a lift.

Here's what I ask about:

  • Welders, plasma cutters, or a big air compressor, those often want their own dedicated circuits, sometimes 240-volt
  • Lighting, and whether you want it bright enough to actually see what you're doing over a bench
  • General outlets spaced so you're not running cords across the floor
  • Heat, since a Bitterroot winter means an unheated slab shop gets cold fast
  • An EV charger now or down the road, which changes how I size things

The move I always push for is planning ahead. Adding a couple of spare circuits and leaving room in the subpanel while the walls are open is cheap compared to opening them back up later.

Why does the subpanel size matter?

The subpanel is the brain of the building. Size it for what you're plugging in today and you'll be fine until the day you buy a bigger tool or add heat, and then you're stuck.

I'd rather size the panel and the feeder for where you're headed, not just where you are. If you tell me you might add a lift, or heat the whole thing, or run a compressor, I build that headroom in from the start.

What about Montana winters and moisture?

Cold and moisture drive a lot of the details out here. An unheated detached building swings temperature hard, and that matters for how and where I run things.

If your shop isn't insulated and heated, I plan for that. Outlets and fixtures rated for damp or cold conditions, connections that won't corrode, and a layout that keeps things serviceable when it's ten degrees outside and you don't want to be troubleshooting.

Underground feeders have to be buried and protected properly so frost heave and moisture don't chew them up over the years. This is Montana, the ground moves, and the wire needs to be installed to live with that.

Do I need a permit for shop wiring?

Plan on this being permitted work. Detached buildings with their own subpanel almost always involve inspection, and the exact requirements for your address are a question for the Ravalli County permitting and inspection folks. They'll confirm what's needed before you commit to anything.

Should you rough it in before the walls close up?

If your shop is still framed and open, that's the best time to call me. Running wire in open walls is faster, cleaner, and gives you flexibility you lose the second the drywall goes up.

I'd rather come look at an open building and plan the whole electrical layout with you than get called after everything's finished and have to fish wire through closed walls. Even if you're only framing now and won't finish the interior for a while, roughing in the important circuits early saves you real money and hassle later.
